I'd honestly rather have all my units undermanned a little and have 8 fresh units that have like 10-15 men missing than to have 6 full strength ones. Surprisingly, I actually don't think I ever HAVE fought the Egyptians with the Romans. If it's an all cavalry archer army that's fine too because they get tired shooting almost as fast as you get tired in testudo, but if they have a number of real soldiers, it becomes a problem. Esspecially against barbarian scum like the Scythians that have such crap morale that you kill 15 out of 300 of their men and all of them go running with their tails between their legs, giving you time to regroup and reorganize until they stop routing and decide to go back to get their asses handed to their unconfident selves again. Mabye the testudo is good against chariots and cavalry, but all I know is that if I'm going to spend half an hour being shot at, I'd rather allow 2 units out of 8 to be shot down to having 9 men each than to have all my men dragging ass while the enemy's not only extremely mobile, but fresh. And next time your enemy sends 6 Fresh Urban Cohorts against your dead-assed exhausted 8 Urban Cohorts, you'll see how much better quantity is over quality.

Next time you set your men to testudo, don't expect a rain of pilii to pour down on the enemy as they charge.

The testudo was a wall against arrows while warding off weak cav charges the romans like said before would form a wall out of their shields (touching not overlapping) while in the center there was a opening at the top in the center of all the legionares that they threw javelins over the wall into the attackers. Units in testudo arent useless you just really suck at using it. If youve ever been fighting against those damn egyptians you would know that the chariots cant move thru a testudo or fire at it with great effect. Many battles are won or lost on your last few units and if they outnumber the others. Ace You really are a dumbass the 2 urban cohorts wouldda made a huge difference to the battle rather than the stamina.
